Wat Pho is remarkable. It has sprawling grounds dotted with stunning stupas (see future post) and the amazing reclining Buddha. This is Bangkok's oldest and largest wat. It is surprisingly quiet and peaceful for all that.
The reclining Buddha is supposed to represent Buddha passing into Nirvana. The statue was commissioned by King Rama III in around about 1840.
Rather prosaically, it is plaster around a brick core. The plaster is covered in gold leaf, which real does the statue a strange glow to it. The feet have mother of pearl inlaid into them, just for extra show-offiness.
This will be a blog about my latest shots and what I liked or was trying to do with them
