If this isn't the classic view of modern China, then I don't know what is. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of these 20-30 story high apartment blocks being thrown up in Tianjin, creating thousands of new flats. Hope they can sell 'em or people are going to lose a lot of money.
Just by the main station, at the end of a metal bridge (Jiefang Qiao) is this clock which shows the Western Zodiac rather than the animals that represent the years in the Lunar calendar as I first thought.
Above is the clock and the bridge together.
However, cool as that is, it is not the best thing at the end of the bridge. The Station must date from the mid 60's and has that classic mix of space age/communist architecture that is just fantastic. The best bit is the clock tower which really captures that Jetson's space age feeling that never really emerged in the way people thought it would.
This is just clock tower and below is the whole station taken form the other side of the river.
